Hyde/Jackson Homes
These 13 homes on eight scattered sites were completed in 2007. Developed on vacant lots where in most cases houses once stood, this project was made possible when the City of Boston changed its policy on the disposition of vacant lots in the late 1990s to prioritize affordable housing development. Hundreds of residents had turned out at public meetings to testify about how difficult it was for low- and moderate-income people to remain part of Jamaica Plain. The Jamaica Plain Neighborhood Development Corporation (JPNDC) was designated to develop the first set of scattered sites made available in Jamaica Plain under the new policy. Seven of the new Hyde/Jackson Homes were affordable to eligible buyers with household incomes below 80% of Area Median Income (AMI), or approximately $66,000 for a family of four. Thanks to additional funding secured by the JPNDC, four homes were reserved for households earning less than 50% of AMI or approximately $42,000 for a family of four. Homeownership opportunities for families in this income range are extremely rare in the Boston area.
