community is located across the street from the West Oakland BART
station, on the former site of a blighted industrial lot and the
distressed Westwood Gardens
public housing
development. To complete site assembly, developer BRIDGE Housing Corp.
also negotiated with CalTrans, the state's Department of
Transportation, to acquire a California park-and-ride lot and replace
the 250 parking spaces on another site. In addition to the 168 rental
townhomes and 14 owner homes, Mandela Gateway includes over 20,000
square feet of retail space.
